How to Select Fishing Reels

Whether you are a novice angler or an expert, there are certain things you should know when selecting a fishing reel. Several different factors determine the quality of a reel. These include the type of bearings used, the material it is made of, and the overall performance of the reel. The drag is also an important component of a reel.
The drag on a spinning reel can be adjusted to help control the speed of the line when casting. There are two types of drag, a front and a rear. The front drag is generally found on higher end reels. It is a lever-action drag system that allows you to set the drag to the exact pressure you desire. You can use this setting to catch a range of fish sizes.
When using a spinning reel, you will want to make sure that you have a free spool. This setting will allow the spool to spin at the same speed as you cast. This is a good way to get the line off the spool without worrying about tangling the line. It is a good idea to practice casting with a baitcasting reel. If you do not, you may end up with a bird's nest or a knot.
While you are fishing, it is important to keep your thumb over the line on the spool as you are casting. This will prevent your thumb from tangling the line. It is also a good idea to have a backlash prevention device installed on your reel. Some people prefer an anti-reverse lock. This device is a switch that will stop your reel from going backward. This is useful if you are fighting a big fish.
The main difference between the types of reels is the retrieving mechanisms. The most common type of fishing reel is the single-action reel. These reels have a cranking handle that turns the spool one revolution. The spool is placed under cover on some models. Alternatively, an open face reel has a spool that is visible. You can rotate the handle clockwise or counter-clockwise.
